Transportation in Taichung

Taichung's transport runs on three tiers: the new MRT Green Line threading north-south through the city, a dense bus network that reaches every district, and plentiful taxis/Uber for door-to-door comfort. The MRT is the quickest way to cover longer distances, clean, air-conditioned, and cheap enough to feel like a bargain compared with taxis. Buses fill the gaps, but you'll need an EasyCard or iPass (sold at any MRT station) to avoid fumbling for exact change. The same card taps you straight onto the MRT gates and most city buses. First-timers should download the BusTracker-Taichung app: it shows real-time arrivals in English and saves you from standing at the wrong stop. Avoid rush-hour taxis between central districts, traffic crawls and the meter keeps climbing. Instead, ride the MRT to the nearest stop and switch to a YouBike (docking stations sit outside every station) for the final stretch; it's faster and costs a fraction of a cab. From Taichung International Airport, the most reliable option is the airport bus that terminates at Taichung HSR Station. It runs throughout the day and is far cheaper than a taxi. If you land late and the bus has stopped, the official taxi queue is just outside arrivals, insist on the meter before loading your bags.
